WAVE Consulting is a full-service cultural resources management firm with proven experience and personalized attention to a growing client base throughout the state of California.

With a combined 25 years of experience, WAVE offers a multidisciplinary approach to environmental compliance as well as cultural resources management.

WAVE provides expertise to a variety of public and private clients in prehistoric and historic archaeology, architectural history, ground-penetrating radar data collection and interpretation, GIS mapping and database creation, and publications and training outreach.

WAVE staff members have worked with federal agencies such as the Department of Defense (DOD), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), and the National Park Service (NPS), as well as many state agencies and local governments.

WAVE’s staff includes three archaeologists who provide a broad range of cultural resources services.

Philip Hanes, B.A., is a project manager and prehistoric archaeologist with professional experience in all aspects of cultural resources management, including Native American consultation, block and seismic survey, large and small-size excavation, and construction and monitoring within oil, gas, alternative energy, timber harvest, development, and land management fields. Mr. Hanes has worked in 10 states, and is permittable by the BLM in five states (CA, CO, NV, UT, and WY).

Michelle Treviño, M.A., is a historian and archaeologist as well as a writer and editor; her qualifications include a graduate degree from New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts in the history of art and archaeology as well as professional experience in construction publishing, architectural history, prehistoric and historic archaeology, and oral history/archival research. In the field, Ms. Treviño has participated in the survey and recording of both historic and prehistoric sites in the Central Valley, Great Basin, and Southern California.

Erin Saar, M.A., RPA (in progress), is an upcoming graduate of the Sonoma State University Cultural Resources Management program with expertise in Traditional Cultural Properties (TCPs) as well as prehistoric and historic archaeology. Ms. Saar has worked in four states and has experience in Native American consultation, ethnographic interviews, block and seismic survey, large and small-size excavation, and public outreach.

  • Section 106 and California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) compliance
  • Construction mitigation planning and monitoring
  • Block and seismic survey for locating and recording archaeological sites
  • Large- and small-scale excavation for data recovery
  • Site testing to determine National Register and California Register eligibility
  • Publishing technical reports to stand alone or in support of larger environmental documents (i.e., EA or EIR)
  • Prehistoric and historic artifact identification and analysis
  • Laboratory analysis, including flotation and curation preparation from data recovery
  • Laser scanning for 3D representation of archaeological sites
  • Use of GIS in documenting sites
  • Creation of site maps using laser theodolite

WAVE Consulting is one of a handful of firms and individuals in the state of California offering GPR services to its clients. This non- invasive method of subsurface data collection is ideal for those projects where excavation is not possible or not desired; the process is more cost-efficient and reliable as a means of gaining information than random subsurface testing.

Philip Hanes and Erin Saar, who were trained by Dr. Larry Conyers of the University of Denver and Dr. Dean Goodman, direct WAVE’s GPR program. WAVE uses the GSSI SIR-3000 equipment, which is state of the art and top of the line. Data are processed using GPR SLICE software.

  • Usage of a top-of-the-line GSSI SIR-3000 GPR unit with 200, 400, or 900 MHz band
  • Data processing with top-of-the-line GPR-Slice software specifically designed for archaeological purposes
  • Perform investigations for cemetery delineations
  • Conduct large- and small-scale GPR survey for locating buried archaeological sited.
  • Used in lieu of traditional testing for a non-invasive methodology in locating archaeological sites.

WAVE boasts the cutting edge in GIS technology. David Cao, B.S., Principal-in-Charge of WAVE Consulting, has been developing database applications and applying GIS technology to research and compliance issues since his time as a research associate at the University of California at Davis. WAVE offers a full range of GIS and remote sensing services that are tailored to each client’s needs. Mr. Cao has a wealth of experience in geospatial data creation, integration, analysis, and maintenance.

WAVE provides data management and collection, GIS analysis, and database creation and maintenance using industry-standard software packages such as ESRI ArcGIS, AutoDesk AutoCAD, Adobe and Macromedia products, and GPS Pathfinder Office.

WAVE staff use Trimble Mapping GPS receivers with sub-meter accuracy in the field. WAVE also offers GeoWeb, an interactive 3D web-based environment that allows for the creation of integrated data, documents, and maps in one online 3D platform. GeoWeb is highly customizable, with client-controlled access for added security.
